The Problem with how we Measure Cities...
The ways city populations are measured in the US and around the world are anything but straightforward, and can lead to some pretty different results. Tired of all the arguing over how big your city really is? Do you hear words like "metro area" and "city proper" get thrown around and want to finally understand what they mean? Lucky for you, I've made this primer on the three main methods for classifying urban settlement. After you're done watching, leave a comment and let me know which you prefer!

Missouri - The US Explained
Просмотров 104 тыс.Месяц назад
Missouri sits in the middle. For the last forty years, it’s been the average center of the country’s population, and today, more than any other, it can claim to be the state where the north meets the south, and the east meets the west. Roughly halfway between the Rockies and the Appalachians, the Canadian border and the Gulf of Mexico, home to flat expanses of farmland, the forested mountains, ...

Great stuff! One issue: the ancestry map is misleading with regards to German ancestry. Perhaps the census had a box for 'Germanic' which could mean English. Hence making one with German flags is even more misleading. More complete details in other comments below.

Tis very natural. Distributary drainage networks work exactly this way. And the US has been fighting this since Robert E. Lee was in charge. There is an obvious solution. But… we haven’t yet done it yet. Establish a port. Let the River decide. But… due to history. We best protect New Orleans with better protections. One persons opinion. But one day…

Great video, I usually find myself switching between Urban Area and Metropolitan, although it usually depends on the list and specific cities suddenly being mentioned or not and based on the list decide which one i find more reasonable. Urban area is generally best best when as you mentioned it starts splitting up a singular urban region you get problems and cities left out. While metro population might not be as accurate, it does manage to generally accommodate all cities.

i've always lived above the fall line. grew up in pennsylvania where we were told depending on what teacher/adult/textbook was being used/who was talking that we were part of the foothills of the Appalachians, part of the Appalachain Plateau, or sometimes they said we were piedmont or hill and valley..it always varied. i just know they always taught the highest point on interstate 80 east of the mississippi river is up on rockton mountain just up the mountain/hill from our town. now in north carolina since 2008 i think i'm still above the fall line bc just googled it and it says Charlotte the closest city to here is above the fall line and part of the piedmont region of north carolina.

One issue with the "urban areas" model: cities can't grow food & often rely most on fairly nearby "rural" regions, who then may largely depend on the cities as where to sell their products and buy other resources. Should one consider them fully separate, or tied enough to the sociopolitics of a city to warrant inclusion?

Thank you for introducing me to urban area populations, which (despite their flaws) seem more accurate. Just a side note. You frequently refer to "city propers." I believe the plural should be "cities proper."

I’m from Alabama so here are a few. There was the Alabama gold rush in the eastern part before the California gold rush. There was a major meteorite strike in Wetumpka that melted rock and created pure white marble in Sylacauga. Side note. A woman was hit by a meteorite in Sylacauga and survived. The actor Jim Neighbors is from there. In Cherokee County, the largest canyon east of the Mississippi is there. Little River Canyon. On the western part of the state is a creek called Shark Tooth Creek I think. Has Megalodon teeth in it.

Most of you blacks are NOT as race mixed as you seem to believe or wish to be. Where is this narrative suddenly originating from, that most of you have so very much white bloodlines? I don't think most of you blacks understand the way genetics work I'm afraid. You all act as if, when you find a Dutch slave owning relation from 1725 on your mom's dad's side, that you somehow still have all of that DNA. You don't carry on the genes eternally, it will eventually-sooner rather than later-drop off! Most blacks over here look just like Africans that range from dark caramel to espresso and the 10 shades between. Not all black Africans are espresso dark either. In fact, most are a sort of light/medium chocolate--between the shade of your Queen Latifah to Denzel Washington--with the Fula, Tutsi, Khoisan, and Amhara sometimes having the caramel/toffee range, though not because of race mixture. Their colours are as diverse as us Caucasians that range from my Danish complexion to the dark Ibero-Mediterranean & Near Eastern stock. I doubt most blacks over here have more than 10% white blood, and even that is a reach. I suspect, looking at Southern whites' features, that the big reveal of American DNA is they have more black & Native American blood than this false narrative that blacks are all that race mixed. Northeastern whites here look the most pure European, mostly Germanic-looking outside of Boston followed by Northwest, upper Midwest & Mountain States.
